Needs of Management Training in
Hospital Administration:
In India
Management education has a special academic discipline was recognized in the
early years of second five year plan and was started as an organized
Postgraduate course on the recommendation of a team of Experts from Ford
Foundation and Government of India. The Indian Institute of Management as an
apex training center for such courses came up initially at Calcutta followed
by starting similar institute at Ahmedabad and later at other places of the
country for preparing Executives to take up challenges of good corporate
management in the industrial sector.
In the field of
Health Care Management also the health survey and Planning committee of
Government of India had the foresight of visualizing the job of hospital
administrators in a professional line in those days itself and recommended
to develop the specialists in the field of hospital management as a distinct
specialty. In the year 1961 Dr.Mc Gibony a Consultant in Hospital
Administration in the WHO was invited by the Government of India as an
Expert to deal with the issues pertaining to the improvement of medical care
and hospital services in our country. He strongly recommended for the
introduction of Hospital Administration as a separate specialty like any
other broad specialty of medical sciences.
