Surgical Oncology

 

About the Department:

 

Surgical Oncology is a super specialty available in few centers and the training for superspecialists are available only in three places in India.  The Department of Surgical Oncology in NIMS has established itself as an important major specialty in this institute with the statistics averaging more than 7000 out patients, 1500 in patient and, about 1800 surgeries including 650major surgical procedures over one year.  The surgeries performed are major gastro-oesophageal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, genitourinary, gynecological, head and neck, endocrine and musculoskeletal tumors apart from attending general surgical emergencies.

 

The radical and innovative surgeries like isolated limb perfusion for melanomas, soft tissue tumors of extremities, preoperative regional chemotherapies and surgeries for GI malignancies are routinely done.  The Department is conducting regular cancer detection and screening camps and educational programs for the general public at various places across Andhra  Pradesh and neighbouring states.

 

Academically the department has kept progress by training the post doctoral fellows in surgical oncology and planning to start M.Ch course soon.  Continuing Medical Education programs have been conducted every year regularly for the past four years in the institute.  We started Rehabilitation Program for Cancer patients and  clinical Research on Immuno-therapy and Molecular treatment.  M.Ch Course will be started Faculty of the department, have participated as guest faculty and examiner for different institutions in India and abroad.  The training programmes for post graduates of general surgery, neurosurgery, maxillo facial surgery, AFRCS, visiting surgeons, oncologists from different states are being regularly organised in surgical oncology.

Nephrectomy, Oophrectomies, Abdominoperineal resection, Excision of pelvic tumours, Laparoscopic mobilisation of stomach for radical gestrectomies and  oesophagectomies

3.      Intra-arterial regional chemotherapy for advanced cancer stomach.

 

4.      Isolated limb perfusion for extremity melanoma/ sarcomas.

 

5.      Minor OT procedures (Diagnostic and therapeutic).

 

 Research Projects:

 

1)      “Utility of CK19 in the diagnosis of Follicular variant of papillary thyroid cancer”.

2)      “An observational  study on archived formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue to evaluate molecular markers of disease progression and response to therapy in breast cancer” (On going)

3)      “An observational longitudinal study to evaluate Molecular markers of disease staging, progression, outcomes and treatment response in colorectal carcinoma”

Most of the patients come by referral system form all over the state and also from neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh.  Regular examination, expert care of cancer and General Surgical care on cancer is taken.  Significant number of persons come for screening of breast and uterine cervical cancers and awareness.
