The Nizam’s Institute of Medical sciences evolved out of Nizam’s Orthopaedic Hospital established to cater to the high incidence of Orthopedic related cases in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh (Now bifurcated into Telangana and Andhra Pradesh)   The Department of Orthopaedics is the oldest working department in the hospital since the inception of Nizam's Orthopaedic Hospital in 1964 and with its team effort has grown into One of the most Experienced and trusted departments.  With its state of the art infrastructure it provides Teritary and Super speciality care to the Patients of various Orthopaedic sub-specialities not only from the states of  Telangana and Andhra Pradesh but also from Various States of India.

The Department:

The department of Orthopaedics was pioneer in introducing various path breaking surgeries for the first time to the State. The first joint replacement surgery was performed in 1976 and Ilizarov technique in 1994. Similarly, it has introduced many path breaking surgeries like Arthroscopy , Inter locking Nailing etc. and has  now evolved into a department which provides most  advanced care in Orthopaedic surgery.

Expertise:

The department caters to the various Orthopaedic Sub-specialities as follows:

Trauma and Accident Care:

With the increasing road traffic accidents the Department caters to the huge burden of poly trauma cases at the 200 bedded Emergency Medical Department, Trauma center (PMSSY).  Surgeries performed in the Trauma center are on par with World standards with most advanced surgical techniques. As the Hospital is a tertiary center the department receives most of the complicated Poly Trauma cases which cannot be operated at other centers from elsewhere across the states.  Our team works in close association with the Department of Plastic Surgery and Vascular surgery in treating and salvaging the maximum number of crush injuries, and compound injuries of upper and lower limbs. 

Joint Replacements:

Our Department was the first to the start Joint replacement surgery in the state. The First total joint replacement was done in 1976. Since then we are catering to the large number of hip and knee arthritic conditions with joint replacement surgeries. Recently the Telangana government has declared the Department of Orthopaedics as Regional Institute for Joint surgery and replacement.

Spine:

The department was the pioneer for deformity (Scoliosis & Kyphosis) correction surgeries of spine.  The department has excelled to become a center for the management of deformities of spine, degenerative spine conditions, infective and Traumatic spine injuries, including advanced spine surgeries. The department has performed maximum number of deformity correction surgeries of spine in the state.  

Sports Medicine:

The department has a dedicated specialist team for the management of Sports injuries. Arthroscopic surgeries of knee, shoulder and ankle joints are performed regularly. With the help of the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation department we treat innumerable Sports injuries referred to our center.

Tumors:

The department also specializes in the treatment of bone tumors through reconstructive joint surgeries and salvage surgeries with the support of Medical oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical oncology, Plastic Surgery and Vascular Surgery departments.

The department supports an exclusive ARTIFICIAL LIMB CENTRE at NIMS.  The Department of Orthopaedics has contributed to the introduction of light weight calipers, Flow reaction Orthosis, under the advice and able guidance of our honorable Ex-President of India Late. Sri. APJ Abdul Kalam.  The artificial limb centers caters to numerous amputees and limb deformities at subsidiary prices and free services are provided under Government scheme.

Teaching and Training:

After the Institute attained university status, The department has started MCI recognized M.S Orthopaedics Post Graduate course in the year 1991with 2 post graduates per year and now has an intake of 6 Post Graduates per year. The Post Graduates are exposed to extensive clinical material, with an average outpatient of 200 patients per day, 80 - 90 in-patient occupancy at any given time of the year and around 3000 surgeries per year. They are also academically trained with seminars, Journal clubs, Case presentations, Ortho-Radiology sessions, Surgico-Pathology sessions and bed side teaching. With the availability of many other super specilaities our Post Graduates are trained more comprehensively compared to the rest of the State. Department also provides training to deputed Post Graduate students from various Medical Colleges across the state.

 The Faculty and Residents have under taken several Research Projects which includes the thesis work of PG students, presentation and publication of original articles and case reports in various conferences and journals.  The Faculty has always participated and actively contributed to various committees in the Administration such as Technical evaluation for equipment, procurement of infrastructure and the academic senate. The Department of Orthopaedics since the beginning has always been represented and run by capable, dynamic, dedicated and gifted surgeons.  The faculty have received several awards and honors for their contributions in various sub specialties.  The department is in the process of starting a course in Sports Medicine next year and also develop other sub specialties through post PG fellowship courses. The Department also intends to start a Ph.D Programme. 

The Department of Orthopaedics has conducted a National Post Graduate Teaching course as a part of IOACON in 2014, A State level Post Graduate Teaching Course in association with Telangana State Orthopaedic Association in 2016 and DNB Orthopaedic practical Examination in 2016.
